Caesarean Section in a Tertiary Hospital in South-South, Nigeria: A 3-year Review

Background: Caesarean section is the delivery of foetus, placenta, and foetal membranes through an incision on abdominal uterine walls after age viability. It a life-saving surgical procedure, which has helped reduce maternal perinatal morbidity mortality over years.
 Objective: To determine rates, indications, outcomes, complications at Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Nigeria.
 Materials Methods: This research was carried out Department Obstetrics Gynaecology, Centre (FMC), South-South, Nigeria between 1st January 2018 31st December 2020. retrospective study.
 Data retrieved from labour ward records, register, theatre patients’ folders during period under review, entered into pre-designed proforma.
 were analysed with IBM SPSS version 23.0. Results presented in frequencies percentages for categorical variables mean standard deviation continuous variables.
 Results: About 959 women had (CS) 2,263 deliveries, giving rate 42.4%. The commonest indication emergency cephalopelvic disproportion (36.0%), while that elective repeat (19.6%).
 Conclusion: our extremely high, almost three times acceptable upper limit set by WHO. Encouraging vaginal birth as means to this high recommended it noted previous leading surgeries.
